While the two generally look very similar when it comes to insurance they are very different. The good news is that both affordable static caravan insurance and park home insurance comes with affordable premiums.
But first of all, in order to understand why you need specific insurance and why static caravan cover, for instance, is not designed to be suitable for a park home, you may need to consider the difference between static caravans and park homes. While they may both look more or less the same on the outside, they will usually require very different types of cover – mainly because of their intended use.
Static homes
This is generally because static caravans tend to be used sporadically as a holiday home, either for use by just you and your family during the Summer season, and / or let out to other holiday makers. They are not designed to be permanent residence and will often be closed up during the Winter months.
Usually hazards faced on top of the usual risks such as fire etc:
- not occupied for all of the time, so something like a small leak or unlocked window could go unnoticed and may lead to a claim (water damage / theft);
- if you rent it out, those coming and going may be liable to cause damage or be less careful with your possessions;
- also, in relation to the point above, if you are renting out the static home, you are effectively running a business and so a special type of cover may be needed.
Park homes
A park home on the other hand is designed to be a permanent residence on a special park home site that is lived in all year round and so park home insurance will be required. These are often very luxurious and once inside you may think you are in a bricks and mortar property.
Many park home sites will not allow you to rent out your park home and there may be minimum age requirements that need to be met before you can move in to a park home (eg. some park home sites only allow residents aged 55+).
Compare this to static caravan sites – they typically have less restrictions as to who can use a static home and their typical residents will be holidaymakers for several months a year. Your static caravan home may be more of a risk than a park home is and so adequate insurance is needed.
Already you may be able to see the difference between the two and their uses and why choosing static caravan insurance or park home insurance cover that is specific to it usually the key to getting adequate protection.
